Clarksdale City Clerk
Laketha Covington is a Cleveland, MS native who migrated to the City of Clarksdale and made history as the first African American City Clerk, the first female African American City Clerk, and the youngest City Clerk in Clarksdale history, starting her career in August 2022 at the age of 24.
Laketha is a proud alumna of the historic East Side High School of Cleveland, MS and a first-generation college graduate. Laketha received her Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Delta State University in Cleveland, MS.
As an Okra Scholar at Delta State, Laketha was an active member of numerous scholarly organizations, including Certified Managerial Accountants/CMA (Vice President), Financial Management Association/FMA, Association of Technology Information Professionals/AITP (Secretary), Ronald E. McNair Scholar, and Career Ambassador (President). She is most proud of having been awarded a prestigious summer internship at NASA, George C. Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama where she developed a comprehensive business plan along with a project plan that documented the operational and managerial resource structure fundamental to the governmental agency’s function.
Even while yet in college, Laketha began her career in the finance industry where she was later promoted to Branch Manager. As a result of her leadership, data research and analysis, and customer service skills, she was recognized for outperforming all other branches in the State.
Laketha considers it an honor and a pleasure to have been afforded the opportunity to lend her skills, abilities, and eagerness to learn to serve her new home of Clarksdale, Mississippi. As Clarksdale’s City Clerk, she looks forward to establishing sound leadership and a solid breadth of knowledge.
